Hindi has two everyday ways to say "new year," and they come from two different languages. नव वर्ष (nav varsh) is from Sanskrit and sounds formal. नया साल (naya saal) is what most people say out loud, and its second word, saal, came into Hindi from Persian. So the most common written wish, (Nav varsh ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein), means "heartfelt good wishes for the new year," and the spoken one, (Naye saal ki shubhkaamnaayein), means simply "good wishes for the new year."
Below are 50 New Year wishes in Hindi that our editors wrote for this page, sorted by the question you're probably asking: what to say at midnight, how to reply, what to send your in-laws, your partner, your boss. Each one is in Devanagari, then in Roman letters so you can read it out, then in plain English so you know what you're sending. The one poem on the page is real, and we say where it comes from.
What is "Happy New Year" in Hindi?
There isn't one fixed phrase. There are five you'll actually see, and they differ in how formal they sound. Pick by who's reading it.
| Phrase (say it like this) | Feel, and where it fits |
|---|---|
Nav varsh ki haar-dik shubh-kaam-naa-yein | Polished and respectful. Cards, elders, a boss, an office email, a speech. |
Na-ye saal ki shubh-kaam-naa-yein | Warm and everyday. Works for almost anyone, spoken or written. |
Na-yaa saal mu-baa-rak | Friendly. Mubarak ("blessed, congratulations") is shared with Urdu. Common in North India and in texts. |
Noo-tan varsh ki man-gal-kaam-naa-yein | The most formal: "auspicious wishes for the new year." Printed cards, letters, a temple or community notice. |
Happy New Year | The English phrase in Hindi letters. Very common with friends and anyone under 40. |
One grammar point catches almost every learner. Naya (new) changes to naye when a word like की (ki) or के (ke) follows the noun. So it's नया साल मुबारक on its own, but नए साल की शुभकामनाएँ with "ki." If you write "naya saal ki shubhkaamnaayein," a Hindi speaker will understand you, but it will look like a translation app wrote it.
Choosing between the respectful आप (aap) and the familiar तुम (tum) matters as much here as on any Hindi greeting. We explain that choice in detail on our Diwali wishes in Hindi page; the short version is to use aap for elders, in-laws and work, and tum for friends, siblings and a partner. Every line below already uses the right one for its group.
What should you say at midnight and on January 1?
In 2026 New Year's Eve falls on a Thursday, December 31, and New Year's Day is Friday, January 1, 2027. In many Indian families the wishes start right at midnight on the phone and continue all of January 1 with calls to relatives. These six lines fit those two moments.
Baarah baj gaye! Naye saal ki bahut-bahut shubhkaamnaayein.
It's midnight! Many, many good wishes for the new year.
Puraana saal jo bhi tha, naya saal aapke liye sirf achchhi khabrein laaye.
Whatever the old year was, may the new one bring you only good news. - 2027
Happy first morning of 2027. May today and the whole year be good for you.
Saal ki aakhiri raat aapke naam. Aane waala saal hum sabke liye achchha ho.
The last night of the year is for you. May the coming year be good for all of us.
Naye saal ka pehla phone aapko hi kar rahe hain. Nav varsh mangalmay ho!
You're getting our very first call of the new year. May the new year be auspicious! -
Ghadi ne baarah bajaaye, aur humne aapko yaad kiya. Happy New Year!
The clock struck twelve and we thought of you. Happy New Year!
The word मंगलमय (mangalmay) in the fifth line means "full of good fortune." Nav varsh mangalmay ho is a short, complete wish on its own and a good one to memorize.
How do you reply when someone wishes you?
This is the question people forget to ask until the message arrives. The simplest reply is आपको भी! (Aapko bhi!), "you too!", or तुम्हें भी! (Tumhein bhi!) for a friend. If you want to say a little more, these work.
Dhanyavaad! Aapko aur aapke poore parivaar ko bhi naye saal ki shubhkaamnaayein.
Thank you! New Year wishes to you and your whole family too.
Aapko bhi nav varsh ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein. Yaad rakhne ke liye shukriya.
Heartfelt New Year wishes to you as well. Thanks for remembering me.
Tumhein bhi Happy New Year! Is saal milna pakka.
Happy New Year to you too! This year we're definitely meeting up.
Aapka aashirvaad mil gaya, ab saal achchha hi jaayega. Pranaam.
I have your blessing, so the year can only go well. My respects. (A reply to an elder.) - Same to you, sir!
Same to you, sir! Aapko bhi naya saal mubaarak.
Same to you, sir! Happy New Year to you too. (Mixing English and Hindi like this is normal at work.)
Shukriya dost! Tumhaare liye bhi yeh saal dhamaakedaar ho.
Thanks, friend! May this year be a blast for you too.
What do you write to parents, in-laws and grandparents?
With elders, a New Year wish usually asks for their blessing as much as it sends good wishes. Use aap, add जी (ji) after the relation, and mention health: for older relatives it matters more than success. These eight lines are written for that.
Maa, Papa, naye saal par aapko pranaam. Aap donon hamesha swasth aur khush rahein.
Mom, Dad, my respects to you this New Year. May you both always stay healthy and happy. -
Daadaji, nav varsh ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein. Is saal bhi aapki kahaaniyaan sunne aayenge.
Grandpa, heartfelt New Year wishes. We'll come to hear your stories again this year.
Naani ji, aapki sehat achchhi rahe, bas yahi hamaari naye saal ki dua hai.
Grandma, that you stay in good health is our only New Year prayer. -
Saasu maa, naye saal ki shubhkaamnaayein. Aapne mujhe is ghar mein jo apnaapan diya, uske liye dhanyavaad.
Mother-in-law, New Year wishes to you. Thank you for making me feel I belong in this home. -
Papaji, nav varsh mangalmay ho. Aapka aashirvaad hum sab par bana rahe.
Father-in-law, may the new year be auspicious. May your blessing stay with all of us. (Many people call a father-in-law "Papaji.")
Aapke bina hamaara koi saal shuru nahin hota. Aapko aur poore ghar ko naya saal mubaarak.
None of our years begins without you. Happy New Year to you and the whole household. -
Is saal davaaiyaan kam aur mithaaiyaan zyaada hon. Naye saal ki shubhkaamnaayein, Daadi!
This year, fewer medicines and more sweets. Happy New Year, Grandma! (Gentle humor works with many grandparents.) -
We're far away, but in our hearts we're right beside you. Lots of New Year wishes. (For relatives in India when you live abroad.)
What can you text friends, brothers and sisters?
With people your own age, tum and a bit of English are normal. Most friends' messages in India are Hinglish, Hindi written with English words mixed in, and nobody expects perfect grammar. Teasing is fine; that's half the fun of a sibling message.
Naya saal, wahi puraane dost. Tumhaare bina 2027 adhoora hai, yaar.
New year, same old friends. 2027 is incomplete without you, buddy.
Is saal ki resolution: tumhaare jokes par kam hansna. Happy New Year!
This year's resolution: laugh less at your jokes. Happy New Year!
Bhai, naya saal mubaarak! Is saal meri cheezein bina poochhe mat lena.
Brother, happy New Year! This year, don't take my things without asking. -
Didi, naye saal ki shubhkaamnaayein. Har saal ki tarah is saal bhi meri sabse badi supporter tum hi ho.
Big sister, Happy New Year. Like every year, you're still my biggest supporter. - 2026
2026 ne jo sikhaaya, seekh liya. 2027 mein bas maze karenge. Happy New Year, dost!
Whatever 2026 taught us, we've learned. In 2027 we just have fun. Happy New Year, friend! -
Chhoti, naye saal mein padhaai bhi aur masti bhi. Donon mein first aana!
Little sis, in the new year study and have fun. Come first in both! (Chhoti, "little one," is a common pet name for a younger sister.)
Tumhaari har party mein khaana achchha ho aur gaane aur bhi achchhe. Naya saal mubaarak!
May every party of yours have good food and even better songs. Happy New Year!
Doori chaahe jitni ho, dosti waisi hi rahe. Naye saal ki shubhkaamnaayein.
However far apart we are, may our friendship stay the same. Happy New Year.
What do you say to a husband, wife or partner?
Romantic Hindi borrows heavily from Urdu poetry, so words like zindagi (life), saath (togetherness) and dil (heart) do a lot of work here. Use tum, which is the usual choice between partners. Where the line has an "I" verb, the form changes with your gender, so both are given.
Mera har naya saal tumse shuru hota hai. Happy New Year, jaan.
Every new year of mine begins with you. Happy New Year, love. -
Is saal bhi haath pakadkar chalenge, jaise har saal chale. Naya saal mubaarak.
This year too we'll walk hand in hand, the way we have every year. Happy New Year.
Naye saal mein meri bas ek dua hai: tumhaari muskaan kabhi kam na ho.
I have just one prayer for the new year: that your smile never fades. -
Pichhle saal ki sabse achchhi cheez tum the. Is saal bhi tum hi rahoge.
The best thing about last year was you. This year, it will be you again. (To a man; for a woman: तुम थीं …
Tumhaare saath ek aur saal bitaane ka intezaar kar raha hoon.
I'm looking forward to spending another year with you. (If you're a woman: कर रही हूँ, kar rahi hoon.)
Hamaari zindagi ka yeh naya panna bhi saath milkar likhenge. Nav varsh ki shubhkaamnaayein.
We'll write this new page of our life together too. Happy New Year.
Door ho, par baarah baje sabse pehle tumhein hi yaad kiya. Happy New Year.
You're far away, but at midnight you were the first one I thought of. Happy New Year. (For a long-distance partner.)
What is safe to send a boss, colleague or client?
At work, stay with aap, keep it short, and wish for success and good health rather than anything personal. If your workplace writes mostly in English, a Hindi line can still be a kind touch for a Hindi-speaking colleague. For English-language client wishes, see our professional New Year wishes.
Sir, aapko aur aapke parivaar ko nav varsh ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein.
Sir, heartfelt New Year wishes to you and your family. -

Aapke saath kaam karke yeh saal aasaan raha. Naya saal mubaarak ho.

Naya saal, naye lakshya, wahi bharosa. Aapko nav varsh ki shubhkaamnaayein.
New year, new goals, the same trust. New Year wishes to you.
Which short lines work for WhatsApp status or a photo?
Statuses and photo captions get read in a second, so these eight are all under ten words. Put the Hindi on the image and keep the English for yourself.
Naya saal, nayi shuruaat.
New year, new beginning. -
Nav varsh mangalmay ho.

Muskuraate rahiye, naya saal hai.
Keep smiling, it's a new year.
Har din naya, har pal khaas.
Every day new, every moment special. -
Apnon ke saath, naye saal ki baat.
With my own people, talking about the new year.
Is January 1 the Hindu New Year?
No. January 1 is the new year of the Gregorian calendar, which India uses for official and everyday dates, and it's celebrated everywhere in India with the wishes above. But several Hindu communities also mark a new year of their own, on dates set by the lunar calendar. If you're wishing someone for one of those, change the greeting.
| New year, date, who | What to say |
|---|---|
| Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas) Day after Diwali: Nov 9 or 10, 2026 Gujarati families | साल मुबारक (Saal Mubaarak) or नूतन वर्षाभिनंदन (Nootan Varshaabhinandan) |
| New Year's Day Fri, Jan 1, 2027 Everyone | नए साल की शुभकामनाएँ, or any wish on this page |
| Chaitra Shukla Pratipada Wed, Apr 7, 2027 Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, Hindu New Year in much of the North | नव संवत्सर की शुभकामनाएँ (Nav samvatsar ki shubhkaamnaayein), "wishes for the new Hindu year" |
The Gudi Padwa date follows Bhakti Bharat's festival calendar; the Gujarati date varies by a day between almanacs, so check with the family if it matters. For English-language wishes for these days, see our Hindu New Year wishes in English, and for the Diwali days themselves, our Diwali wishes in Hindi.
Is there a famous Hindi poem for the New Year?
Search for "New Year shayari" and you'll find thousands of rhyming couplets with no name attached; almost all are anonymous internet verses. One real New Year poem by a major Hindi poet is short enough to quote on a card. It's Harivansh Rai Bachchan's "नव वर्ष" ("New Year"), and it opens like this:
वर्ष नव,
हर्ष नव,
जीवन उत्कर्ष नव।— Harivansh Rai Bachchan, "Nav Varsh," in Satrangini (1945)
Varsh nav, harsh nav, jeevan utkarsh nav. "New year, new joy, new heights in life." Bachchan (1907–2003) is best known for Madhushala (1935), and Satrangini ("The Rainbow") is a later collection of his, dated 1945 in his list of works on Wikipedia. We checked the text against Kavita Kosh, the volunteer-run Hindi poetry archive, where the poem is listed under Satrangini. The rest of the poem keeps the same pattern, pairing "new" with hope, path, song and love, and ends on "जीवन की जीत नवल" (jeevan ki jeet naval), "a new victory in life."
Those first three lines make one of the best Hindi New Year card lines there is: they rhyme, they're nine words, and anyone who grew up with Hindi will recognize the poet. Write the lines, then the poet's name, then your own wish below.
If you'd rather use a quotation in English with a traced source, our New Year quotes page has lines from Burns, Tennyson and Lamb, each matched to the original text.
How do you write your own New Year wish in Hindi?
Most Hindi wishes are built from three pieces. Learn the pieces and you can make a wish for anyone without copying one.
- Who it's for. A name or relation, plus जी (ji) for anyone you respect: दादी जी, सर, भाई, दोस्त.
- One thing you wish for them. Pick a single word from the list below and put it in "may there be ..." form: आपके जीवन में सुख हो (aapke jeevan mein sukh ho), "may there be happiness in your life."
- The standard greeting.
| Word | Meaning, and who it suits |
|---|---|
| सुख (sukh) | Happiness, ease. Anyone. |
| सेहत (sehat) / स्वास्थ्य (swaasthya) | Health (everyday / formal). Grandparents, parents, anyone unwell. |
| सफलता (safalta) | Success. Students, colleagues, a boss. |
| तरक्की (tarakki) | Progress, promotion. A friend in a new job. |
| शांति (shaanti) | Peace. Someone after a hard year. |
| समृद्धि (samriddhi) | Prosperity. Business owners, clients, a formal card. |
Worked example. For your friend Priya, who started a new job this year: who = प्रिया; one wish = तरक्की; greeting = नए साल की शुभकामनाएँ. (Priya, nayi naukri mein khoob tarakki ho. Naye saal ki shubhkaamnaayein!) "Priya, may you go far in your new job. Happy New Year!"
What makes a Hindi wish look machine-translated?
A few small slips give it away. None of them will offend anyone, but fixing them is the difference between "nice try" and "you wrote this yourself."
- Translating "happy" word for word. "ख़ुश नया साल" (khush naya saal) is a literal translation nobody uses. Use one of the five phrases in the first table.
- Naya instead of naye. It's नए साल की (naye saal ki), not "naya saal ki." See the grammar note near the top.
- Mixing aap and tum in one message. If you start with aap, keep aap. Switching halfway reads as careless.
- The wrong gender on "I" verbs. A man writes रहा हूँ (raha hoon), a woman रही हूँ (rahi hoon).
- Two spellings, one word. शुभकामनाएँ and शुभकामनाएं are both correct; pick one and use it throughout.
- Calling it "Saal Mubarak" on January 1 to a Gujarati friend. Not wrong, but Saal Mubaarak is the classic greeting for the Gujarati new year after Diwali (see the table above). On January 1, "naya saal mubaarak" is the clearer choice.
When and how should you send it?
Midnight messages are expected among friends and partners; for elders, a phone call on the morning of January 1 is warmer than a text at 12:01. Voice notes are very common in Indian families, so reading one of the lines above aloud, with the Roman spelling as your guide, often means more than typing it. Wishes stay polite to send for the first week of January, and saying नए साल की शुभकामनाएँ the first time you see someone in person in January is normal. On a printed card, write the Hindi on the front or at the top and sign in whichever script you're comfortable with. And if a group chat is filling up with forwarded images, a short personal line in Hindi, even an imperfect one, will stand out more than another picture.
For English card wording to go alongside, see our New Year's card wishes.
Quick questions
(What is "Happy New Year" in Hindi?)
The most common forms are (Naye saal ki shubhkaamnaayein) in speech and (Nav varsh ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein) in writing. Both mean "good wishes for the new year."
(What should you say on New Year's Day?)
Say नए साल की शुभकामनाएँ or नया साल मुबारक when you greet someone, and add a short wish for their health or happiness, such as "aapki sehat achchhi rahe." To an elder, add pranaam and ask for their blessing.
Is "Naya Saal Mubarak" Hindi or Urdu?
Both. The phrase is used in everyday Hindi and in Urdu; mubarak comes from Arabic through Persian. In Hindi it's written नया साल मुबारक and sounds friendly rather than formal.
How do you reply to a New Year wish in Hindi?
Say आपको भी! (Aapko bhi!), "you too!", or for a friend तुम्हें भी! (Tumhein bhi!). For a fuller reply: धन्यवाद!
