Write Your Own in One Minute

A wish that sounds like the sender takes about four steps, and none of them need a gift for words.

1. Start with their name. "Maya," or "Dear Mr. Alvarez," sets the tone before anything else does.
2. Name one thing from this past year. A move, a recipe, a hard week, a trip. If you can't think of one, "thank you for being there" works.
3. Wish them one thing, not five. Health, rest, a good job, a good table. One wish feels meant; five feels like a list.
4. End plainly. "Happy New Year" is enough. Add a plan if you have one: "Let's get dinner in January."

Worked example. Name: Maya. Thing from this year: she helped you move in the rain. Wish: a calm year. Result: "Maya, thank you for hauling boxes in that downpour. I hope 2027 is a lot calmer for you. Happy New Year, and dinner's on me in January."

When to Send It

Timing changes how a wish is read. For 2026 into 2027, the calendar falls like this:

What to Leave Out

• Resolutions for them. "I hope you finally lose weight" is not a wish.
• Comparisons with last year to someone who had a hard one. Skip "this year will be better than the last" unless you know them well.
• The same text pasted to everyone. A group blast is fine for a big chat, but add the name when it's one-to-one.
• Year-specific lines you can't finish. If you write "2027" make sure it's the right year, because a card that says the wrong one is the one they'll remember.
