82 New Year wishes for your boyfriend: midnight texts, card paragraphs, long distance, first New Year, hard years, plus husband and wife lines.

Robert Burns, whose "Auld Lang Syne" gets sung at midnight every December 31, also wrote one of the plainest love songs in English about a couple growing old together. In "John Anderson, my jo" (1790), a wife looks at her husband's white hair, remembers the hill they climbed together, and says they'll go down the other side hand in hand. That's the whole job of a New Year message to someone you love: look back at the year you shared, then say you're staying for the next one.

The short answer: a good New Year wish for your boyfriend names one real moment from your year together and one thing you're looking forward to with him in 2027. Two or three sentences is plenty for a text; a card can take a paragraph. Five you can send as written (swap in your own details where you see brackets):

  • Happy New Year, babe. You were the best part of 2026, and I'm keeping you for 2027.
  • New year, same favorite person. Can't wait to see what we get up to next.
  • Of all the midnights this year, this is the one I'm happiest to share with you. Happy New Year.
  • Thank you for every ordinary Tuesday this year. They were my favorite days. Here's to more of them.
  • Happy 2027 to the man who makes even [our worst road trip] a good story. Love you.

Below is a quick way to write your own, then 77 more lines, written by our editors and sorted by the situation you're in: first New Year together, long distance, a hard year, funny, a caption for the photo you'll post, plus sections for a husband, a wife and any partner you call "my love." Celebrating with a crowd instead of one person? Our New Year's Eve wishes by the hour cover the whole night.

Three Questions to Answer Before You Type

The difference between a message he screenshots and one he forgets is rarely the wording. It's whether the message could only have been sent to him. Answer these three first and the rest gets easy.

What kind of year did he have? A great year wants celebration; a rough one wants steadiness. "This is going to be our best year ever!" lands badly on someone who lost his job in October.

Where will he read it? A text at 12:01 a.m. should fit on a lock screen. A card on the nightstand can run a full paragraph. A caption under a photo is read by your friends and his mother, so keep the private stuff out.

How long have you been together? Three months in, "I love you" may be a big step to take in a text; three years in, a list of reasons why is welcome.

Your situationLength and place
New relationship, together at midnightOne line, said out loud or texted the next morning
Together a year or moreA card with 3–5 sentences, one shared memory
Long distanceA text timed to his midnight, plus a voice note
He had a hard yearShort, steady, no "best year ever"
Posting a photo of you twoUnder ten words, nothing private

The Formula: One Memory, One Promise, One Plan

Almost every message on this page follows the same three beats, in any order:

  1. One memory from 2026. Specific beats sweeping. "The night the power went out and we ate cereal by candlelight" says more than "all our amazing moments."
  2. One promise. Small and true: to be patient when he's stressed, to finally learn his mom's lasagna, to stop stealing the blanket.
  3. One plan for 2027. Something you'll actually do together: the trip, the apartment, the concert, Sunday pancakes.

Worked example. The weak version: "Happy New Year baby, I love you so much, you mean everything to me, let's make 2027 amazing!" Nothing in it is wrong, and nothing in it is his. Now run it through the formula. Memory: he drove four hours to help you move in August. Promise: you'll plan the next weekend away, not him. Plan: the cabin trip you keep talking about. Result: "Happy New Year, love. I still think about you showing up with a borrowed truck in August like it was nothing. This year I'm planning the weekend away, and I'm booking that cabin. Thank you for 2026." Four sentences, and he'll know nobody else got that text.

You don't need all three beats every time. A midnight text can be just the plan; a card should have all three.

Short Texts for Midnight

At midnight his phone fills up with "Happy New Year!!" from group chats. Something short with his name or an inside reference stands out. These all fit on a lock screen.

  • First text of 2027 goes to you. Obviously.
  • Happy New Year, [Name]. Same plan as last year: you and me.
  • Midnight kiss owed. Collecting in person.
  • 2026 had a lot going on. You were the good part.
  • Twelve more months of your terrible jokes. I'm in.
  • Happy New Year to my favorite person to do nothing with.
  • New year, new calendar, same name in my "favorites."
  • Counting down with the TV, thinking about you. Happy New Year.
  • Whatever 2027 brings, I'd like to find out with you.
  • Happy New Year, handsome. Come find me.

Romantic Paragraphs for a Card or a Long Text

If he's the kind of man who keeps cards in a drawer, or if you've been together long enough that a paragraph won't scare anyone, write one. These are built on the formula above; replace the brackets with your own moments.

  • Happy New Year, my love. When I look back at 2026, I don't think about the big things first. I think about you making coffee before I was awake, the drive to [place] with the windows down, the way you held my hand at [hard moment]. I don't know everything 2027 will bring, but I know I want to be next to you for all of it.
  • I used to make New Year's resolutions and break them by February. This year I only have one I'm sure of: keep choosing you. Thank you for a year of patience, laughter and the world's longest grocery runs. Happy New Year, babe.
  • Before you, New Year's Eve was something to get through. Now it's my favorite excuse to tell you, out loud and in writing, how glad I am that you're mine. Here's to [the trip / the new apartment / whatever's next]. I love you.
  • This year taught me what it looks like when someone shows up. You did, again and again, in small ways nobody else saw. I saw. Happy New Year, and thank you for being the steadiest thing in my life.
  • We've laughed so hard this year that I cried, and cried a couple of times when it wasn't funny, and you were there for both. That's all I want from 2027: more of you, more of us. Happy New Year.
  • Somewhere between [first memory of the year] and tonight, you became my favorite habit. I'm not breaking it in 2027. Happy New Year, my love.

Your First New Year Together

The first New Year as a couple carries a small question under it: are we the kind of couple who say big things yet? Match the message to where you really are. Warm and a little playful is safer than declarations you haven't made in person.

  • First New Year with you. I think I could get used to this.
  • A few months ago I didn't know you. Tonight I can't imagine the countdown without you. Happy New Year.
  • Our first midnight together. Let's make it a tradition.
  • So glad 2026 introduced us. Let's see what 2027 has planned.
  • Happy New Year! This is my favorite way a year has ever ended.
  • New relationship, new year. Both off to a very good start.

For a Long-Distance Boyfriend

Distance turns midnight into a scheduling problem. Send your wish at his midnight, not yours, then send another at yours so you both get the moment. A voice note or a short video beats text when you can't kiss him at twelve. (The time-zone table further down helps.)

  • It's midnight where you are and I'm still waiting for mine. Happy New Year, love. See you in [month].
  • Two time zones, two countdowns, one person I'm counting down for.
  • Happy New Year from [city]. Saving my midnight kiss for when you land.
  • 2026 had too many miles between us. 2027 is the year we close them.
  • I watched the fireworks on my phone so I could watch them with you. Happy New Year.
  • You started the new year before me. Tell me, is it any good? Love you.
  • Every call this year was the best part of my day. Happy New Year. Keep picking up.

When He Had a Hard Year

Lost job, lost parent, health scare, a year he'd rather forget: a loud "best year ever" message can feel like it's skipping over what happened. Steady and short is better. Tell him you're staying, not that everything will be fine.

  • This year asked a lot of you. You don't have to be happy tonight. I'm just glad you're here.
  • Happy New Year, love. Whatever 2027 brings, you won't face it on your own.
  • I'm proud of how you got through this year, even the days you don't think you did.
  • No big resolutions needed. Just one step at a time, and I'm right next to you.
  • 2026 was heavy. Let me carry some of it into the new year with you.
  • I don't need this year to be perfect. I only need it to be kinder to you.

Funny and Flirty Lines

If you two already talk in jokes, a funny wish is more honest than a serious one. Keep it about the two of you, not a meme he's seen five times today.

  • My New Year's resolution is to steal fewer of your hoodies. That's a lie. Happy New Year.
  • Thank you for putting up with me for another 365 days. The contract renews automatically.
  • Happy New Year! I've decided you're still my favorite. Don't let it go to your head.
  • 2027 goals: more naps, more tacos, more you.
  • You're the only person I'd stay up past ten for. Happy New Year.
  • New year, same rule: you get the last bite. Sometimes.
  • Roses are red, it's January one, you're stuck with me for another one. (I'm not a poet.)
  • Happy New Year to the man who still can't fold a fitted sheet. I love you anyway.

Captions for the Photo of You Two

A lot of searches for New Year wishes are really searches for a picture with words on it. If you're posting your own midnight photo, the caption should be short and should make sense to everyone who sees it. Save the private stuff for the text.

  • Year two, same kiss.
  • Rang in 2027 with my favorite.
  • Same person, new year.
  • Starting the year exactly where I want to be.
  • Midnight, but make it us.
  • 2026: good. 2027: with him.
  • Happy New Year from the two of us.

New Year Wishes for Your Husband

A husband has heard "Happy New Year, I love you" from you many times, which is exactly why one specific sentence about this year means more. Robert Browning's poem "Rabbi Ben Ezra," published in Dramatis Personae in 1864, opens with lines you'll often find in wedding and anniversary cards:

"Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made"

— Robert Browning, "Rabbi Ben Ezra," Dramatis Personae (1864)

The poem itself isn't a love poem: it's an old scholar arguing that age is the reward, not the decline. But the first two lines have become a wedding and anniversary standard because they say what a New Year card to a husband wants to say. Copy them at the top of the card, add the poet's name, and write two plain sentences of your own underneath: one about 2026, one about the year ahead.

“Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.” — Robert Browning, Rabbi Ben Ezra, Dramatis Personae (1864)
  • Happy New Year to my husband, my teammate and still my favorite date.
  • Another year of being married to you. Best decision I keep making.
  • You carried a lot this year, for all of us. Thank you. Let's make 2027 a little lighter for you.
  • Of all the years we've had, I'd do this one again just for [moment]. Happy New Year, love.
  • From our first New Year to this one, you're still the person I look for at midnight.
  • Happy New Year, husband. Same house, same team, same terrible taste in movies. I wouldn't change any of it.
  • Grow old along with me, Browning said. We're working on it. Happy New Year.

New Year Wishes for Your Wife

Burns's "A Red, Red Rose" was first printed in 1794, in Pietro Urbani's A Selection of Scots Songs; Urbani noted that a celebrated Scots poet had written the words down after hearing a country girl sing them. Its opening is one of the best-known love lines ever written in Scots, and it suits a New Year card because the rest of the song is a promise to keep loving "while the sands o' life shall run":

"O my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune."

— Robert Burns, "A Red, Red Rose" (1794)

Keep the Scots spelling if you copy it. "Luve" and "play'd" are part of the charm, and correcting them makes it look like a greeting-card rewrite. If roses in June feel odd on a January card, borrow the second stanza's promise instead: love that lasts "Till a' the seas gang dry."

“O my Luve’s like a red, red rose, that’s newly sprung in June.” — Robert Burns, A Red, Red Rose (1794)
  • Happy New Year, love. You make home feel like home, even on the hard days.
  • I'd pick you all over again, every January. Happy New Year, beautiful.
  • Thank you for every plan you made, every worry you carried, every laugh you started this year. I see it all.
  • Here's to another year of your laugh being the best sound in our house.
  • Happy New Year, love. My one resolution: more dates, fewer "we should really go out sometime"s.
  • You're still the first person I want to tell everything to. Happy New Year, my wife.
  • Midnight came and I only wanted to be next to you. Happy New Year.

If it's Christmas cards you're still working on, we have separate pages for Christmas wishes for your wife and Christmas wishes for your husband.

"Happy New Year, My Love": Lines for Any Partner

"New year wishes for love" is searched far more often than "for boyfriend" each December, and it makes sense: plenty of people want a line that works whatever word they use for the person. These work for a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife or partner without changing a word.

For couples who've been together a long time, the ending of "John Anderson, my jo," the poem this page opened with, is hard to beat. A wife sings to her husband, and the "hill" is their life together:

"John Anderson, my jo, John,
We clamb the hill thegither;
And mony a cantie day, John,
We've had wi' ane anither:
Now we maun totter down, John,
And hand in hand we'll go,
And sleep thegither at the foot,
John Anderson, my jo."

— Robert Burns, "John Anderson, my jo," The Scots Musical Museum, vol. 3 (1790)

In plain English: "jo" is sweetheart, "clamb the hill thegither" is climbed the hill together, "mony a cantie day" is many a cheerful day, and "maun" is must. Burns took the title from an older, much bawdier song and turned it into this. It's a perfect card for a silver or gold anniversary that lands near New Year, or for a partner who'll appreciate the Burns connection to "Auld Lang Syne." Swap in his name if it isn't John; Burns won't mind.

“Now we maun totter down, John, and hand in hand we’ll go.” — Robert Burns, John Anderson, my jo (1790)
  • Happy New Year, my love. You're my favorite thing about every year.
  • All my good news in 2026 had you in it.
  • Here's to the year ahead, and to whoever falls asleep first at the next party.
  • I don't need a new me in 2027. I need more us.
  • My love, thank you for making an ordinary year feel like a lucky one.
  • Whatever we resolve tonight, let's resolve to keep each other.

A Short Prayer or Blessing for Him

If faith is part of your relationship, a simple blessing can mean more than any romantic line. Keep it personal and short; one sentence of prayer plus his name is enough. For more, including Bible verses for a New Year card, see our Christian New Year wishes.

  • Lord, thank you for him. Guide his steps this year and keep him safe. Happy New Year, love.
  • I'm praying for your health, your work and your peace in 2027. And thanking God for you.
  • May this year bring you rest you didn't get in the last one. Praying for you always.
  • Happy New Year. I pray that every door you knock on this year opens.

To an Ex-Boyfriend, If You're Sure

People do search for this, so here's the honest version: only send a New Year message to an ex if you're on good terms and you'd be fine with no reply. Keep it short, kind and free of any hint of "maybe we should." If either of you is in a new relationship, a text at midnight can read as more than you mean; morning is safer.

  • Happy New Year. Hope 2027 is good to you.
  • Wishing you a great year ahead. Take care of yourself.
  • Happy New Year! Hope the new job [or other news] is going well.

What to Leave Out

Copy-paste giveaways. "To my one and only, my everything, my soulmate" stacked in one sentence reads like a template. Pick one.

Resolutions for him. "This is the year you finally get to the gym" is not a wish, it's a request.

Complaints about the old year. A light joke is fine; a list of what went wrong between you belongs in a conversation, not a New Year text.

Public declarations he hasn't heard in private. If you've never said "I love you," don't say it first in an Instagram caption.

The wrong year. After midnight it's 2027. Typing 2026 at 12:03 a.m. happens to everyone; check before you hit send.

When to Send It: Midnight, Morning or Both

New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, so January 1, 2027 falls on a Friday and most people get a long weekend. If you're together, say it at midnight and save the card for the morning. If you're apart, text at his midnight. These conversions assume US Eastern Time, which is UTC−5 in winter, and each city's local clock in late December.

If he's in…His midnight is…
Los Angeles3 a.m. Jan 1, Eastern
London7 p.m. Dec 31, Eastern
Berlin or Paris6 p.m. Dec 31, Eastern
Manila11 a.m. Dec 31, Eastern
Sydney (summer time)8 a.m. Dec 31, Eastern

A card can be handed over any time from Christmas to the first days of January. Texts are best between 11:55 p.m. and the next morning; after about January 3, "Happy New Year" becomes something you say in person when you see each other.

Quick Questions

How do I wish my boyfriend a happy new year in a cute way?

Mention something only the two of you know: a nickname, an inside joke, a plan. "Happy New Year to my favorite person to do nothing with" is cute because it's about your habits, not because of the emojis. Add a photo of the two of you from this year if you have a good one.

What should I say to a new boyfriend at New Year?

Keep it light and forward-looking: "So glad 2026 introduced us. Let's see what 2027 has planned." Save big declarations for when you've said them face to face.

Should I text him at midnight or wait until morning?

If you're together, say it out loud at midnight and skip the text. If you're apart, midnight in his time zone is the moment, since that's when he's thinking about who to text. A longer message or card works better the next morning, when he can actually read it.

Is a card better than a text?

For a boyfriend you've been with a year or more, yes: a short handwritten card with one real memory gets kept, and a text gets scrolled past. Do both if you like: a short text at midnight, the card at breakfast.
