Write Your Own in Under a Minute

If none of the lines above fit, use this three-part formula. It works in a card, a chat message or an email:

1. Greeting and name: "Happy New Year, Priya!"
2. One real thing from this year: a project, a favor, a joke, a hard week you got through together.
3. One wish for them, not for the company: rest, good news, a smaller inbox, a trip they mentioned.

Worked example: "Happy New Year, Priya! I still don't know how you got the September report out with half the team out sick, but I owe you one. Hope your trip to Lisbon in 2027 finally happens."

That message took under a minute and could only have been sent to Priya. One true detail beats three adjectives.

What to Leave Out

Performance talk. "Let's crush our targets in 2027!" belongs in a team meeting, not a personal wish.

Gossip or complaints about the company, even in a joke. Screenshots last longer than the year.

Assumptions about how they celebrate. Not everyone drinks, parties or makes resolutions.

Copy-paste to twenty people. If you send a group message, send it to the group. Twenty identical DMs look worse than one shared post.

Anything you wouldn't want your manager to read. Work chats are company property in most workplaces.

Cards, Group Cards and Timing

A few habits make work greetings easier for everyone:

Timing: send personal wishes in the last days before the break (in 2026 that is usually Wednesday, December 23 or the morning of Thursday, December 24) or on the first morning back. A text on January 1 itself is fine for work friends, but most colleagues would rather not hear from work on the holiday.

Group cards: if you're signing a card for a colleague with ten other names on it, write one short line plus your first name. "Happy New Year! Thanks for all the help with onboarding. – Sam" is plenty.

Small gifts: a chocolate bar or a good pen with a handwritten note is enough between coworkers. If your company has a gift policy or a gift exchange, follow that instead of giving gifts on the side.

Late is fine: "Happy New Year" is normal through the first week or two of January. After that, switch to "Hope your year is off to a good start."
