It is a Marathi chant, and almost every word in it is affectionate rather than formal. "Ganpati" is Ganesha as lord (pati) of the ganas, Shiva's attendants. "Bappa" means father, the way a child would say it. "Morya" is the part people argue about. The full refrain heard at visarjan is longer, and the second half is the one that makes people cry a little on the last day.

The usual explanation for "Morya" is a saint, Morya Gosavi, a devotee of Ganesha who worshipped at Morgaon and later settled at Chinchwad near Pune, where he built a temple. In this telling, his name became so bound to Ganesha that devotees joined the two. Treat that as tradition, not settled history: his dates are not even agreed. Wikipedia's article on him lists 1375 to 1561, then shows scholars placing him anywhere from the 13th century to the 17th (Courtright and Feldhaus date him 1610 to 1659). So if a card or a forward tells you the chant is "exactly 600 years old," nobody can prove that.

When Is Ganesh Chaturthi in 2027?

Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the fourth day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, so its Western date moves every year. In 2027 it begins on Saturday, September 4 in India. • "Look at the moon tonight." Seeing the moon on Chaturthi night is traditionally avoided, to escape mithya dosha, a false accusation. A moon-themed wish is the wrong one for this day.
• Sending a visarjan message too early. Families immerse on different days. Ask, or wait for their photos.
• Mixing up festivals. A "Happy Diwali" graphic with Ganesha on it is a different festival, even though Ganesha is worshipped at Diwali too.

Visiting, Gifts and Cards

If you are invited to someone's home during the festival, the visit is the greeting. Arrive in time for aarti if you can, take your shoes off at the door, and bring sweets, fruit or flowers rather than anything with meat or alcohol. A box of modaks or laddoos is the classic choice. A written card is rare for this festival, which is exactly why one stands out: write two or three sentences, sign with your name, and add the family's names if it's going to a household.
