The plot fits in a sentence. Della and Jim Dillingham Young rent a furnished flat at $8 a week. Each owns one treasure: her long hair and his gold watch, which had been his father's and his grandfather's. On Christmas Eve Della sells her hair to buy a platinum chain for the watch, and Jim sells the watch to buy her the tortoise-shell combs she had admired in a Broadway window. Both gifts are useless by the time they're opened.

It could have been a sad ending. It isn't, because of what they say to each other. When Jim stares at her short hair, Della doesn't apologize for the haircut. She tells him why she did it:

"Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered … but nobody could ever count my love for you."

That line, from the Project Gutenberg text of the story, works because it is about her choice, not the object. It is a good model for a card: say what you gave up, noticed or would do again, and let the present be the small part. If you quote it, credit it as "from O. Three things from the story are worth stealing for your own message:

• Notice the specific thing. Jim knew exactly which combs Della had "worshipped long in a Broadway window." A card that names one specific thing beats a card full of superlatives.
• Keep it light when it goes wrong. Della's first words over the ruined gift are "My hair grows so fast, Jim!" A little humor tells her the day is still fine.
• Put the gift second. O. Henry ends by calling the two "the wisest" of all who give gifts. The wisdom was in the giving, not the receipt.
