A Simple Formula: Thank, Name, Look Ahead

Every message above follows the same three steps, and you can use them to write your own in a minute.

1. Thank them. Start with "thank you" or "Happy New Year," whichever feels natural. Both are fine as an opener.

2. Name one specific thing. A project, a decision, a moment they helped. One detail is enough, and it's what makes the note feel written for them.

3. Look ahead with a wish for them. Wish them something (rest, health, a good year). Don't make a promise about your own performance; that turns a greeting into a self-review.

Worked example. Before: "Happy New Year boss!! You're the best boss ever!" After: "Happy New Year, Dana. Thank you for letting me lead the vendor switch in June. I learned more from that than from any training. Wishing you a restful break and a great 2027." The second version is longer by one sentence, but it's the one your boss will remember.

What Not to Write to Your Boss

Over-the-top praise. "Best boss in the world" sounds fine in a group card signed by twelve people. From one person it can read as a pitch.

Promises about next year. "I'll work twice as hard in 2027" puts your performance in a holiday message. Save it for your review.

Requests. A raise, extra days off or a reference all deserve their own email, sent on a normal workday.

Religious or political lines, unless you know your boss shares them. "Happy New Year" works for everyone.

Jokes about age, drinking or the office party. They don't survive being forwarded.
